Seat Pan Depth: What It Is and How to Measure It
Seat pan depth affects thigh support, knee clearance, and backrest contact. The guide explains how to measure thigh length and assess usable depth specs.
If you are asking what is seat pan depth on a chair, the short answer is: the distance from the front edge of the seat to the point where the seat meets the backrest, measured along the seat surface. It decides whether you can sit all the way back with your knees clear of the front edge, and on most chairs it is fixed at the factory. That is why it belongs at the top of a spec sheet check.
What the number measures, and the two ways vendors report it
Seat pan depth is a front-to-back measurement of the seat itself, not the overall depth of the chair. It is often not the depth you can use either, because backrests usually sit slightly forward of the rear edge, so the last inch or so of cushion never touches you. Some manufacturers publish both figures. UPLIFT’s Pursuit specification sheet lists a seat 18.9 in deep, a 19.3 in “seat depth” callout on the drawing, and a separate “usable seat depth” of 18 in (45.7 cm). Compare the usable figure against your leg.
On chairs with a sliding pan, the spec is a range. Steelcase’s seating specification guide gives the Leap a 3 in adjustment, from 15.75 to 18.75 in (40 to 47.6 cm), and the wider Leap Plus 2 in, from 16.75 to 18.75 in. The Aeron has no slider; Herman Miller’s product sheet fixes depth per size at 16.4 in (A), 17 in (B) and 18.9 in (C), and the only adjustment is choosing the letter before you buy. Why depth outranks most other adjustments
The regulatory language is short. OSHA’s computer workstation eTool asks that the seat pan “provide support for most of the thigh without contact between the back of the user’s knee and the front edge of the seat pan,” that depth be adjustable “to adequately support taller users while allowing shorter users to sit with their back fully supported,” and that the front edge have a rounded waterfall profile. CCOHS says the same from the user’s side: you should be able to sit “without pressure at the back of their knees, with their back supported by the backrest.”
A pan that is too deep forces a choice. Either you sit fully back and the front edge presses into the soft tissue behind the knee, or you slide forward to free your knees and lose the backrest. Most people do the second without noticing, and the lumbar support is then a hand’s width behind them. Cornell’s sitting notes put it bluntly: if seat depth exceeds your buttock-popliteal length, “the user won’t be able to use the backrest.”
A pan that is too shallow does less damage, but it concentrates your weight on a smaller area and leaves the front of the thigh unsupported, usually felt as sit-bone soreness.
This is why a better lumbar mechanism does not automatically make a better chair for your back. If the pan is wrong, the lumbar never engages.
The body measurement it has to match
The anthropometric dimension behind seat depth is buttock-popliteal length: the distance from the back of the buttocks to the crease behind the knee, seated. The pan has to be shorter than that by enough to keep the front edge clear.
BIFMA G1, an office seating guideline, draws on the CAESAR anthropometric survey. A 2016 presentation hosted by the Institute of Industrial and Systems Engineers lists the G1-2013 population values:

Against those, Cornell’s notes recommend 16.5 in (41.9 cm) for a fixed pan and 14 to 18.5 in (35.6 to 47 cm) for an adjustable one. A fixed pan is sized for the shortest thigh it must serve, because too little support is the less harmful error.
The research supports designing to the small end. A 2020 study in the International Journal of Occupational Safety and Ergonomics had 36 university students rate six seat depths from 32 to 52 cm over 90-minute sessions. The depth rated most comfortable after 90 minutes was 40.2 cm (15.8 in), the 5th percentile of the group’s buttock-popliteal length, not the median. Students are not office workers, so treat the exact figure as illustrative; the direction, err shallow, is the point.
That reframes the price question. A slider is a mechanism, not a luxury, and it is the only thing that lets one chair fit both a 16 in and a 20 in thigh. The Leap’s range covers the 5th-percentile female with room to spare; a fixed 18 in usable pan fits the middle of the distribution and nobody at the short end, whatever else the chair does. How to measure yourself and check a chair
Sit on a flat bench with your buttocks against a wall, feet flat, knees near 90 degrees, wearing what you work in. Measure from the wall to the crease behind your knee: that is your buttock-popliteal length.
Subtract clearance. OSHA only requires that nothing touch the back of the knee; the two to three finger widths (roughly 1 to 2 in) quoted by shop floors and this site’s chair fitting guide is a convention, not a standard, but it puts you in the right region. A 17.5 in measurement therefore wants a usable pan of about 15.5 to 16.5 in; a 20.5 in measurement wants roughly 18.5 to 19.5 in.
Compare that target to the chair’s usable depth, not its total depth. If the vendor gives one number and the backrest is visibly set forward of the rear edge, assume you lose half an inch to an inch. If the chair has a slider, check that your target falls inside the range and not at either end. Thigh length varies a lot between people of the same height, so depth needs the tape measure; the chair and desk sizer on this site only estimates seat height.

The 90-minute check once the chair is under you
Set seat height first, from the keyboard, in the order Home Desk Guide’s chair-height sequence lays out. Then sit fully back, slide the pan if it slides, and work. Where you feel it after 90 minutes says which way the depth is wrong:
- Tightness or numbness behind the knees, or a habit of perching forward off the backrest: the pan is too deep. Shorten it or size down.
- Soreness under the sit bones and a sense of sliding forward, with the front of the thigh floating: too shallow. Lengthen it or size up.
- Lower-back fatigue with no knee symptoms and the lumbar set correctly: you have probably drifted forward off the backrest, which means the pan is still slightly deep.
Persistent pain is a reason to see a clinician for a diagnosis, not to buy another chair. A correct seat depth removes one mechanical cause; it does not treat a disc or a hip. The spec checklist for choosing a chair puts depth first because it is the dimension you cannot fix afterwards.
