What chair adjustments can and cannot tell you
A 2023 chair-design study compared four configurations of one chair in 31 adults without existing symptoms. Lumbar support and seat-pan tilt improved spine and pelvic posture, but 39 percent of participants still developed clinically significant pain during prolonged sitting. Those results do not establish that a particular chair or setting treats back pain.
Use the checks below to identify fit constraints, rather than to diagnose the cause of pain. NIAMS guidance advises seeing a clinician when pain does not improve after a few weeks, or accompanies symptoms such as numbness, tingling, leg weakness or pain after an injury. Do not keep increasing support pressure to work through those symptoms.
Match the fit observation to the control
The following is an editorial checklist drawn from OSHA’s chair guidance. Each row directs attention to an adjustment; it does not identify a medical cause.

Work through one row at a time. Keep a note of the control and its previous setting so you can reverse a change that makes the fit worse.
Check seat depth before adding lumbar pressure
With your feet supported, sit back and inspect the space behind your knees. OSHA’s chair guidance calls for thigh support without the front edge contacting the back of the knee. A long pan may prevent you from using the backrest in that position.
If a slider is available, use the chair’s instructions to shorten the usable depth. If the backrest moves forward instead, that may be the depth control. A fixed pan has no equivalent adjustment; moving the lumbar pad forward is not a replacement for checking the usable seat dimensions.

Identify the lumbar control your chair has
Lumbar height changes where support contacts the lower back. A separate depth control changes its forward position; a firmness control changes resistance and may not move the support to the same extent. If the whole backrest moves vertically, identify that control before concluding that the lumbar position is fixed. If no control changes where support lands, note the limitation as a fit issue.
Check what happens when you recline
A useful fit check includes the positions in which you work, not just the chair locked upright. Follow the model’s instructions to adjust tension and any recline limiter. Observe whether you can still use the backrest and keep your feet supported through the range you intend to use.

OSHA’s working-position guidance recommends changing position frequently. A recline control offers another position; it does not remove the need to stand up, walk or otherwise change activity.
Resolve armrest and desk interference
Bring the chair to the work surface after the seat and backrest checks. Look for the physical reason you leave the backrest: an armrest meeting the desk edge, a keyboard beyond comfortable reach, or a surface that requires raised shoulders.

Separate an adjustment limit from a mechanical fault

Finish with a short record: the usable depth, the lumbar controls available, the recline setting and any desk interference.
